The Bonsai Society's goal is to promote an interest in and appreciation of the art of bonsai through education, training, information and exhibition. Bonsai ("bone-sigh") is the ancient horticultural art of growing trees and shrubs in small trays or pots. In Japanese, the word "bonsai" means tray-tree or, loosely translated, tree-in-a-tray.
From January through November, Society members meet each month at the Garden Center in Loose Park, 5200 Pennsylvania, Kansas City, MO for programs, demonstrations, and workshops. We also present several exhibits to which the general public is invited, including exhibits at the Japan Festival, and Powell Gardens.
Each year, the Society brings nationally recognized bonsai masters to Kansas City to provide expert instruction in the special techniques of creating, developing, styling and training bonsai, with a focus on bonsai suitable for the Midwest.
The Society's membership reflects the rich diversity of our community representing all types of employment, races and cultures. It offers a casual and warm environment to pursue the study and appreciation of Bonsai
